Looking any type financial aid for elderly lady soon in wheelchair in Brevard County, Florida to remodel bath?

Needs to remodel her bathroom, exchange bath for walkin shower, enlarge door and room itself, install lower commode for easier transfer from chair, handrails, shower seat. She resides in Brevard County, Florida and is over 55 probably 60. We’ve donated time and labor for many other projects but don’t have funds available for this. Labor will still be donated. She already walks permanently bent over with a walker and will shortly be confined to a chair.

How wonderful that there are volunteers to do the labor!

I’d try this first:
Call the Senior Resource Alliance/Senior Help Line,
either dial 2-1-1 or call 321-632-6688.

These folks should be able to direct you to sources for assistance.

If not, try calling
State Clearinghouse on Disabilities

You can call the county. They will put you in touch with groups like the Elks, Moose Lodge, etc who will come in and make that upgrade for her.

Moved from Hillsborough County and it’s a state effort.

My daughter is a social worker in a different
state, but Ive heard this situation mentioned
    from her before,
call some bathroom fixture places… talk to the
owners, they could write it off as a donation.
also, check with places like salvation army,
    elderly social organizations, rehabilation places,
they might be able to refer you. Also the dept
of social services might pay for her to get these
things. Good luck and God Bless

Call your Agency On Aging program. 1-800-510-2020. They may not be able to do it because she is on the lower end of the age scale, but they will have some referrals. Sometimes these referrals include the cost of replacement for the fixtures.

Here’s an easy solution to the shower seat. Some of the seats can be pretty expensive and a lower output option is a resin lawn chair in the shower. Of course, for someone who is disabled, there should already be appliques on the shower floor to keep the person from slipping, they will keep the chair from slipping too. This may, or may not, work for this individual, it depends on whether or not she will be able to lift herself to the seat.

I also agree, if the Agency on Aging, or some other governmental entity cannot help with this, try the Rotary Club, Elks Club or Optimist Club. They may have a way to help.

In addition to the above listed agencies, you might try to contact Habitat for Humanity and the Disability Board in your area for help with these matters. The disability board also can install ramps for easier access wheelchair ramps.
