Broken ankle- second time in a year?

I only really come on this site when I feel in real need of instant and anonymous help. As you may recall from some of my other posts, I broke my ankle (lower fibula) back in February, however after being in a cast for 6 weeks I was able to get back on my feet straight away.

However, this morning I broke my ankle (the same one, but a few centimetres lower this time) for the second time this year. I am now in a cast again. Aside from the hassle of crutches, Wheelchairs, difficulty showering etc, I am rather worried that:

a) I have something wrong with my bones.
b) The repeated break will weaken my ankle further and make future injury much more likely.
c) Due to the above, the break will take longer to heal and I may need surgery.

For the record, when I broke it this time I was in quite a bit of pain, but not nearly as much as back in Feb and I could move the joint and weight-bear a little, so I didn’t realise it was actually broken until my x-ray was looked at. Does the fact of ability to weight-bear and move bode well for a quick recovery, or does the fact that I tried to do both those things mean I may have made my ankle worse?

I fear I am becoming quite the expert at this. :(
Any help/advice from medical professionals would be much appreciated.
This is only the second time I’ve broken a bone, and beleive me, I’ve taken many tumbles in my 17 years. :p

As for family history, my nanny developed osteoporosis in her early seventies, however apart from that I can’t think of anything.
Also, I was back walking on my ankle as soon as I got my cast off last time only because the doctor said it would be a good idea, and it was absolutely fine. :)

get your GP to refer you to a speacialist possible to look at bone density but the break imparticular you may have a week point from previous damage and may need plating on the side 6 weeks doesnt seem long i had a small plate and pins when i cracked off both sides of my fimur and was not out of a cast for 8 weeks and and now having my wrist done bone graft and screw and i had a cast on for 8 weeks and now in a removeable splint for 8 weeks. i would want to see a speacialist to see if surgery would strengthen the damage. for bone density the question probs is do you have the disorder in the family and have you suffered except from the other broken bone from repeated brakes?

i think getting straight back on to your feet after 6 weeks is too soon and more care should be taken next time.

Ok so maybe i was abit abrupt in saying more care should be taken….. anyway i meant that the union between the 2 bones can be weak for anything up to a year past injury the brake you have now is possibly a result in the bone weakening from the first break. i would see a specialist Pediatrican possibly could aggrevate you later on in life with arthritis etc

on the web, where can I find what medicare will reimburse on a power wheelchair?

there is no set amount. any durable medical company that accept an assignment on a chair must accept what medicare pays. if they provide you with a chair and accept the assignment the chair is yours
